  MIXTECS DURING THE POST-CLASSIC PERIOD
A.D. 900-A.D. 1521

uring the Post-Classic period, the Valley of Oaxaca and surrounding areas were dominated by the Mixtecs, considered among the greatest artists and craftsmen in Mesoamerica at the time of the Conquest. Their architecture, painted books, polychrome pottery, and gold work reached a high state of sophistication. Upon seeing Mixtec pieces sent to Charles V of Spain, the 16th-century German master Albrecht Dürer wrote “... in all the days of my life I never saw things which delighted my heart so much as these, for I saw among them marvellous works of art and I remained astounded at the subtle skill of the men of those distant lands.”
